Crossplay or Steam only
Crossplay is on for every new Valheim server. Players on Xbox, PC Game Pass and Steam join it with a join code, and Valheim 1.0 brought crossplay to PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 as well. Turn Crossplay off in Settings for a Steam-only server, which players find in the community server list (keep Community listing on) or join by its address.
Set up your crossplay server
- Order the server. Choose Valheim, the location closest to most of your group and a plan. Starter's 8 GB suits most groups, and a server holds up to 10 players.
- Name it and set a password. In Settings, set the Server name, World name and Join password. The password needs 5 to 64 characters and can't appear in the server name. Crossplay lists the first 47 or so characters of the name.
- Leave Crossplay on. Crossplay stays on unless you switch it off. Press Save configuration, then restart the server: settings take effect at the next start.
- Copy the join code. Shortly after the server starts, your dashboard shows a six-digit Crossplay join code under the connect address. Press the code to copy it, or press Copy join code in the Console tab.
How Xbox and PC players join
- Open Join Game. In Valheim, each player picks their character and opens the Join Game tab.
- Enter the join code. They enter the six-digit join code to find your server.
- Enter the join password. Valheim then asks for the join password: the one in your Settings, not the join code.
Each player's character is saved on their own device, so it comes with them to your world.
If a player can't get in
- Wrong password: the join code only finds the server. At the password prompt, type the join password, not the code, and check its capital letters.
- An old code: the join code can change when the server restarts, so share the one your dashboard shows now.
- No code yet: the code appears once the server has registered for crossplay, shortly after it starts. If it never does, check that Crossplay is on in Settings.
Clear dropped items, for Xbox players too
- Turn on Server tools. In Settings, switch on Server tools, press Save configuration and restart the server. It runs Warp Hosting's small helper on the server, and players install nothing.
- Count them. With the server running, open the Console tab and press Count dropped items. The console lists what would be cleared, by kind, and what would be left.
- Clear them. Press Clear dropped items, then Yes, clear them.
Valheim's console, where PC players type commands such as removedrops, isn't on Xbox. These buttons do the job from the server instead, whoever is playing. They clear the items lying on the ground across the whole world that Valheim would remove in time by itself, such as wood from felled trees and dropped loot. Chests, item stands, tombstones, live fish, dragon eggs and anything built stay.
To take the helper out again, switch Server tools off and restart.
Mods and crossplay
With Server software set to BepInEx, the server loads the plugins you upload to BepInEx/plugins, and every player needs the same client mods. Console players can't add mods, so mods that every player must install suit a group that plays on PC.
Bring a world from Xbox
A world started on an Xbox can move to your server through the Xbox app version of Valheim on a Windows PC. Our console world guide shows each step.
